The Egyptian-Sudanese electricity linkage is a serious step towards similar linkages with other African nations, said the political adviser of the African Parliament's head.<br />

Mostafa al-Guindy, an Egyptian lawmaker and head of the parliamentary block of North Africa, said such linkages will turn Egypt into a regional hub for the exchange of power, especially that the country succeeded in creating a surplus of electricity.<br />
<br />
Several African countries urgently need electricity, hence the paramount importance of a power network that connects the states in the continent, Guindy said, adding that such a project would sustain electrical power for all participating countries.<br />
<br />
He called on African governments to facilitate the requirements of the hopeful project, as well as Egypt's other direction to establish a network of roads and railways connecting African countries to achieve economic and commercial integration and investment projects in different fields.<br />

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced that electricity linkage with Sudan started experimental operation on Sunday, planning to official launch the project in a ceremony by the end of this week.<br />
<br />
The capacity of the first phase being operated is 50 megawatts. The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company has completed the construction of the 300-megawatt electrical connection line with Sudan. The extension of Toshky transmission plant, which is a double circuit transmission line stretching over 170 kilometers with a capacity of 220/66 kV, has been established and linked with Sudan’s Wadi Halfa in collaboration with Siemens. The first phase of the linkage was due to enter service in March but has been delayed.<br />
<br />
Chairperson of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Co. (EETC) Sabah Mashaly indicated in a press release in February that the cost of the project is LE32, 550, 000 and €562500. The statement explained that the network consists of air-insulated substations (AIS) to inhibit power loss. The amount of electricity to be transmitted is estimated to be 400 megawatts.<br />
<br />
An official from the Ministry of Electricity pointed out that the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Co. finished the overhead power lines in a record time of less than six months, revealing that experts from both countries are exchanging visits to accelerate the final works in the project.<br />
<br />
The following phases will enter service gradually in tandem with the rate of accomplishment on the Sudanese side, a source at the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy told Egypt Today.</div>

The fourth version of Surena, Iranian humanoid robot, was unveiled during a ceremony on Saturday, IRIB news agency reported.<br />

The ceremony was held in the faculty of engineering of the University of Tehran, with vice president for scientific and technological affairs, Sorena Sattari, in attendance. The robot has taken four years to be developed. It stands 170 cm tall, weighs 70 kg, and is able to walk at the speed of 0.7 km/hr.<br />
<br />
It can move around the sides, backward and on rough surfaces while remaining upright on uneven ground and is able to lift objects, recognize faces, shake hands, and also kick a soccer ball.<br />

Surena also has the ability to detect 100 voice commands in addition to listening, speaking and converting text into speech; visual ability and the ability to recognize 100 different objects are other features of this robot.<br />
<br />
The Iranian humanoid has been making steady progress in the past ten years. The first version of the robot was unveiled in 2008. It had only 8 degrees of freedom (DOF). Surena 2 was unveiled in 2010 and had 22 DOF and could walk at a pace of 0.03 meters per second. The third generation of the robot had 31 DOF and a walking speed nearly 10 times as fast, at 0.2 m/s.<br />
<br />
The third version of Surena has been made with a fund of 20 billion rials (about $470,000 at the official rate of 42,000 rials) through four-year efforts of a team of 70 experts.<br />
<br />
Surena was a Parthian spahbed ("general" or "commander") during the 1st century BC. He was the leader of the House of Suren and was best known for defeating the Romans in the Battle of Carrhae.</div>

In a bid to boost image, Egypt hosts 1st international arms expo<br />

Egypt opened its first international weapons fair on Monday, an event that organizers hope will project a message to the world that the country is secure and stable.<br />
<br />
The three-day Egypt Defence Expo features the world's top arms companies and hundreds of military and civilian participants from dozens of countries.<br />
<br />
The United States, Egypt's largest arms supplier, had over 40 companies present, alongside major firms from Britain, France and Germany, as well as Russia, China, India and Gulf monarchies.<br />
<br />
"We are seeing a shift in paradigm away from some of the heavy machinery that characterize our assistance in past years toward a more nimble kind of approach to countering terrorism," U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Dorothy Shea said.<br />

"We are trying to share our hard-won lessons from the battlefield and help our Egyptian colleagues take advantage of that and make sure that their acquisitions of equipment are appropriate and really benefit them to the maximum." King Salman of Saudi Arabia has said that an agreement has been reached with Egypt to build a bridge over the Red Sea connecting the two countries.<br />

The monarch made the announcement in televised comments on Friday - the second day of his visit to Cairo - after meeting Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and before representatives of the two countries began signing investment deals.<br />

"I agreed with my brother, his Excellency President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, to build a bridge connecting the two countries," Salman said.<br />

Port developer and operator DP World has announced that construction work on its Port de Futur will begin in Senegal by the end of 2018. The project is intended to provide the country with a state-of-the-art integrated port, logistics hub and special economic zone.<br />

It has also announced plans to develop the economy of Mali, the desert state to the east of Senegal. The decisions were taken following meeting between Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the chairman of the Dubai-based company, and President Macky Sall of Senegal and President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta of Mali.<br />
<br />
DP World took over Dakar Port, with Senegal’s only deepwater harbour and container terminal, in 2007. However, Dakar Port is located on the end of a peninsula, and so has nowhere to grow.<br />
<br />
DP World’s intends to build a terminal with an annual capacity of 1 million teu at Bargny, on the south-eastern outskirts of Dakar, as well as a 6.5 square kilometre, $800m logistics hub and freetrade zone. The zone will also be close to Blaise Diagne airport, which is still under construction, and connected to Dakar by a new rail link.<br />
<br />
Altogether, the port schemes will have a capital cost of around $1.3bn.<br />
<br />
Port de Futur is competing with a number of other west African port projects for access to a hinterland of around 200 million people in 16 countries.<br />
<br />
Bin Sulayem told the press that Port de Futur and its associated developments would be “one of the most advanced and well-organised free zones in Africa and globally, using the latest state-of-the-art equipment and technology”.<br />
<br />
He added: “The size of the region and its population reinforces the need for multi-modal transport, logistics and customs capabilities across borders, and as our business moves the world across 40 countries we have the know-how to help in that mission.”<br />
<br />
DP World is presently negotiating land allocations for the free-trade zone, and has promised to reveal its masterplan for the redevelopment of the existing port in the coming months.<br />
<br />
The chairman also visited Mali in his tour of west and north Africa. His company is hoping to put in place a programme of works to enable Mali to make use of Port de Futur. The plan includes a transportation and logistics strategy with the same electronic customs processes DP World developed for the port of Jebel Ali in Dubai.<br />
<br />
He said: “Mali has a long history of trade in gold and agricultural products and though landlocked, has the opportunity to maximise use of its 1,800km of inland waterways such as the Niger River to connect local farmers and businesses to international markets.<br />
<br />
“Our flagship Jebel Ali model in Dubai, connecting port, free-trade zone, customs processes and logistics supported by advanced digital systems and technologies, is a shining example that countries in Africa such as Mali can benefit from.
